Measuring your ring size at home

There is much advice online on how to measure your ring size at home. Perhaps you have heard of methods such as using a piece of paper, string or a measuring tape. The reality is these methods are all highly inaccurate and may show completely distorted outcomes resulting in ordering the wrong size ring.
How do we know this? Simply because we’ve tried and experimented these methods ourselves.
There are two methods we highly recommend-

Frequently asked questions about ring sizes

What is the average ring size for men and women? Is there a different ring size chart?
The standard ring size for women is L to M and for men is Q to S. No, the measurements are the same, standard ring sizes apply to both.
How tight should a ring be?
We suggest your ring should sit comfortably on the finger without pinching the skin. The ring must be tight enough not to turn on its own, but you should still be able to slide it over your finger with ease.
Can you make a ring bigger if the size is wrong?
We offer a complimentary ring resize for up to 30 days after you receive your ring. This is not valid on tension rings or eternity rings. These types of designs will need to be re-manufactured at the customer’s expense, so please choose carefully. If a ring needs to be adjusted more than 2 sizes, it may need to be re-made completely depending on the ring design which means a cost will be involved. For more information on resizing/returns please see contact us at info@bbdesignerjewellers.com.au.
Are ring sizes universal?
Rings are sized on a universal scale, but different countries have different ring-size systems.

BB tips to remember

You should always try the measurement three or four times for better accuracy.
Your fingers tend to swell in the day and are larger towards the evening. To avoid any discomfort, we recommend you measure your fingers in the evening. Keep in mind that your ring size can fluctuate about half a size based on your body temperature and hydration levels.
Ring sizes may also vary according to temperature. Cold weather can make your fingers slightly shrink in size.
If you’re planning a surprise, finding a ring size discreetly can be tricky, here are a couple of suggestions that are effective-

  • See if you can borrow a ring they already wear (be mindful that fingers can be different sizes especially the finger that the intended engagement ring will go on). Using the BB Ring Sizing Guide place the ring on the sample size circles to see the size of the ring.
  • Use the BB ring sizer and slip it on their finger when they are asleep. This can be risky but accurate. Keeping in mind the ring gauge should be able to slide off comfortably but be snug on the finger at the same time.
  • Take a ring they own that you have seen them wearing on a certain finger and measure it up against your middle finger. Slide the ring down and mark with a pen where it comfortably stops. Use the ring sizer to measure the size. Alternatively visit your local jeweller and asked to be measured using the pen marking as the guide to find the size.

If you are hesitating between two sizes, the thumb rule is to always aim for the larger size as it will be easier to make a ring smaller than bigger should you make a mistake.
